Kayelle Allen ~ Sci-fi Erotic Romance Author ~ Interview and Giveaway!

Hello, Kayelle, and welcome. I’m excited you’re here, taking time away from all you do at Marketing for Romance Writers and Romance Lives Forever. You’re actually not here about either of those wonderful Yahoo Groups, but to answer some interview questions about the first book in your Antonello Brothers series, At the Mercy of Her Pleasure, a sci-fi erotica romance.

Before we get going on the interview, here’s a little about Kayelle…

Kayelle Allen is an award-winning, multi-published author. Her heroes and heroines include badass immortals, warriors who purr, and agents who find...well, the unfindable. And sometimes (shh!) make them disappear again. She is known for unstoppable heroes, uncompromising love, and unforgettable passion.

I love that…unstoppable heroes, uncompromising love, and unforgettable passion…

Now that you have me smiling, you ready to get started? Let’s go for it…

What drives Senth, motivates, and/or inspires him?

Senth is a HalfKin, a half-human half-feline humanoid, and he is all about having fun. He's playful as a kitten, a prankster at heart, and having a good time is everything. Until he meets NarrAy Jorlan -- and then he is all about having a good time with her.

What’s Senth's job? What does he do for a living?

Senth is a professional thief. He's been trained from age three to be the finest thief in the Thieves' Guild, inspired by his adoptive father, who once headed the Guild. Senth's level during the book At the Mercy of Her Pleasure is 19, which means he can break into government buildings and handle the top security. Few thieves in the guild ever get to this point, and can make comfortable livings well below it. Senth is reaching for level 49 -- the top, like his father.

Who is NarrAy to Senth? Can you give us a bit about the first time they met each other?

NarrAy Jorlan is a captain in the rebel army. When her parents are murdered by the empress and their research confiscated, NarrAy hires a thief to steal back the most critical aspect. Senth is seven years younger, gorgeous, and innocent in the ways of women. He appeals to her and his virginity becomes a challenge. Can she indulge in a little innocent flirtation? Can she at least steal a kiss?

Can you tell us about the abilities of NarrAy? How do they help OR hinder?

Her parents were scientists, but had been unable to conceive a child. The "Better Project" enabled them to hand pick attributes they would want for their child, and NarrAy was artificially created and implanted in her mother's womb. As a Better, NarrAy's natural tendencies are enhanced. She is beautiful, seductive, and has addictive sex-pheromones.

She's also brilliant, and the product of two scientific parents who looked at the world in a logical fashion. For all that, she eschews anything remotely resembling organization, and tends to overlook details that can get her into trouble.

In one scene in the book, she runs out of room in her own suitcase, and packs some of her belongings in Senth's. This irritates him because he has been trained since childhood to be orderly and neat. When she gets upset, she tends to lose control of her pheromones, and that causes Senth all sorts of grief. He becomes addicted to her at their first kiss, and her body syncs with his.

Throughout the story, every time he is in distress, she can feel it, and he can't bear to more than a handsbreadth away from her. Considering the fact that his master makes him swear to remain a virgin and therefore (supposedly) unaffected by her pheromones, this is a huge conflict. How is he ever going to tell her goodbye when the job ends? How will she be able to do hers when her heart follows him wherever he goes?

The connection between Senth and NarrAy has me intrigued…like there’s going to be lots of sexual tension between the two. Always fun to read.

Is At the Mercy of Her Pleasure included in a series? If so, what series and can you give us titles and a tagline for other books in this series?

This is the first book in the Antonello Brothers series. The sequel is For Women Only, about Senth's older brother Khyff, whom you meet in Senth's story.

Can you share anything about the Betters in the story?

Betters were created as the next step in mankind's evolution. They were able to do more, be more, achieve more. They were to be a "Better Generation." However, mankind soon saw that they were too advanced and too capable. Within a few years, the first Better Laws were passed, restricting their freedoms and mandating the cessation of Better experiments. They were sterilized, to prevent them from breeding. Some parents of Better children took them out of the Tarthian Empire to prevent this from happening. A few parents falsified records stating the procedure had been done. NarrAy's parents told her she is sterile. Whether she is or not is open, and may be explored in another story.

An interesting possibility with NarrAy…

Tell us about Senth's world? Does he live by a hierarchy or some other code/laws of their kind? If so, can you give us a few of their rules?

Senth grew up in the strict hierarchy of the Thieves' Guild. His adoptive father was Luc Saint-Cyr, aka the Harbinger, head of the Guild. From childhood it was assumed he would follow in his father's footsteps and become a leader, and the current leaders among the guild all treat him with a slight deference they don't show to others, although Senth is the last one to realize that. He tends to chafe at rules, even though he follows guild protocols to the letter. In his personal life, he's all about fun and games. In his professional life, he's by-the-book.

The inner conflict makes him an intriguing character. For example, he cannot shoplift chocolates and roses for NarrAy, because that would be using his talents for personal gain other than to make a living. So, he takes advantage of a situation in which some teenagers give him a hard time about being half-human, and steals their money. He knows the kids can't report it because then they'd have to admit where they were when their funds were taken, and they'd get in trouble for harassing him. He then uses the stolen money to buy gifts for NarrAy, because he had "earned" the income to do so.

Senth also appears in another book in the Tales of the Chosen series (Wulf), and in that book, he'd gotten in trouble at the Thieves' Academy and had been kicked out of school. His father had to hop between planets to deal with it. It turned out that he'd stolen ice cream from the academy cafeteria. When asked about it, he explained that a friend of his had been punished for not studying by being forbidden to buy ice cream. Senth figured he could buy it and give it to him though. When he got in trouble and was told not to buy and give the other boy ice cream, he stole it instead. To him, stealing was simply a way of life, and the fact that the Thieves' Guild was teaching him how to steal (but not from them) didn't make sense. His father's advice? The guild didn't like having its nose rubbed in mistakes, and not to get caught in the future. ^_^

What are you working on now?

I'm writing the sequel about Senth's adoptive father, and a non-fiction book for authors on how to write dialogue.

Quickie Quiz

       Getting to know Kayelle Allen

2 Things you do to relax:

1. Watch TV - I prefer gripping dramas over comedy, and scripted programs over reality shows.

2. Go for a walk - anywhere. I enjoy walking, even in the rain. It clears my head. I'm not doing anything except taking one step after another.

Favorite sport to watch:

Baseball. I understand it so it's fun. I became a baseball fan when the Atlanta Braves (my local team) went to the World Series the first time. The entire area had Braves Fever -- we were watching the games and staying up late to watch them.

Cat or Dog:

I have had both, and enjoy watching them play. They are restful creatures. Because I write about feline humanoids, I'd probably choose a cat, but it would have to be a cuddly one. I'm a cuddler at heart.

Favorite places to write:

I prefer to sit in front of my computer because it's faster, but will curl up in a recliner and write notes by hand now and then.

Place you’ve always wanted to go, but haven’t:

Bora Bora. It's breathtakingly beautiful. But I am terrified of deep water. I'd have to leave the mainland, and face looking out at the ocean in every direction from either a ship or an airplane. The thought of that is enough to trigger a bit of panic, so not sure I would ever get up the courage to go. This is probably the one fear I have never overcome in my life. I've overcome pretty much everything else.

Breakfast drink:

Coffee. Gotta have my coffee in the morning. Weak, decaf, three creams and artificial sweetener, but I gotta have it or I don't feel like I've started the day.

Favorite season ~ why:

I love the one I'm in now. I'm a firm believer in being where you're planted.

What are your hobbies /past times (besides writing):

Reading, movies, photography, hiking. I enjoy nature walks.

At the Mercy of Her Pleasure ~ Antonello Brothers 1: (a Tarthian Empire Story)
Blurb:
When NarrAy steals a kiss from Senth, he steals her heart, but how much more are they willing to take -- for each other?
Senth holds a lofty position in the elite Thieves' Guild. Drugged since puberty to suppress his feral half-feline side, nothing suppresses his daredevil, risk-loving human half. His master offers him a deal. Work with a Better, an enhanced woman with addictive, pleasure-laced pheromones, and he'll buy and free Senth's cruelly enslaved older brother. The job? Grab-and-go. The condition? Remain a virgin. The drug he takes ensures it, no matter how tempting the woman or her pheromones. The problem? Nothing goes right. The job outlasts the drug's effect. All Senth wants is one touch, one kiss, one oh-so-tempting lick of her perfect, lush skin. The downside? With his brother's freedom at stake, how can he risk putting himself at the mercy of her pleasure?

Warning: Contains half-feline thief who plays with what he steals, and a by-the-book military heroine whose passion he liberates. Author not liable for items missing once book is open, including hearts.

Excerpt:

Tarthian Empire: Kelthia, Miraj City
The Ghost Nightclub

As Senth approached, the bouncer at the Ghost put out a hand. "Hold up, kid. You got ID?"

Senth opened his cloak, revealing the unmistakable insignia of the Thieves' Guild, a skeleton key inside a slashed circle, on the lining. No key required. He gave his Sen'dai's hand sign.

"Ffffftt!" The bouncer held up both hands and made an apologetic nod. "Sorry. Why didn't you say you were his right up front?"

"His shouldn't have to." He brushed a hand down the front of the cloak. "And I'm no kid."

"Sorry, sir." She opened the door and bowed.

On the hotel level, six of his Sen'dai's private, no-nonsense goons in dark suits and darker glasses blocked the hallway he approached. Senth flashed the hand signal again. With a grudging nod of respect, one of the men opened a door for him and then shut it behind him with a click. Background noise ceased.

Without moving, Senth sized up the room. High ceilings, subdued lighting, heavy furniture, marble-topped tables. No paintings. Two statues, obvious fakes. Dense drapes, deep carpet, wood-paneled walls. The positions of the door and windows, plus the spacing of the panels, meant a hidden safe. No visible security, but nowhere the guild set up a meet lacked it.

A door opened, and though Senth could not see the Harbinger, he felt the man's presence. A native-born Kelthian, Luc Saint-Cyr's dark chocolate skin and habitual black attire made it possible for him to disappear into the shadows.

Though the Harbinger had personally sent for him, his presence was the last thing Senth had expected. If his Sen'dai was on Kelthia, this was not the usual grab and go. The man moved one hand into the light and gestured Senth closer.

"Sen'dai." He stepped forward and bowed. Like most people, he avoided looking directly into Luc Saint-Cyr's eyes. The man wore contact lenses that turned his eyes completely black. Raven's eyes, peering, intent. Predatory.

"With me, Senthys." Saint-Cyr led him through the darkened room to a hidden flight of stairs. He paused with one hand on the railing. "How much was it?"

Senth lifted his head. "Sir?"

"Khyffen's tip tonight. How much?"

He cast about in his mind how his Sen'dai knew he'd been with his brother.

"Of course I know what you're up to." The Harbinger tucked a finger under Senth's chin and smiled down at him. "You're the finest Deshai I've ever trained. Nothing that affects you escapes my attention. You're too important." He started up the steps and halted so quickly, Senth bumped into him.

"Sorry, sir."

"Well, Senthys? How much?"

He held his Sen'dai's gaze, focusing on the centers of the solid black orbs. "A thousand, sir."

"Good." One corner of his mouth lifted. "I told Liu to take care of him."

"Liu's one of yours?" They continued up the stairs.

"Mmm. You know your brother's master and I are old…friends." His emphasis on the last word sent a chill up Senth's spine. "I want to help Khyffen. He'd be an exceptional asset to my face business."

For Women Only, Saint-Cyr's private security company and one of the faces for his true business. It offered premium protection services to celebrity female clientele.

"Thank you, sir."

"You offered once to bargain for his freedom." Saint-Cyr stopped, and then turned back. "Are you still open to that?"

Senth leaned forward. "Yes, sir! Whatever it takes."

Saint-Cyr shook a finger at him. "What have I told you about being too eager?"

"Sorry, Sen'dai." He hung back. "You surprised me."

"Bargains are always a surprise. Keep that in mind."

"Sen'dai." He lowered his head in respect.

"Senthys, you'll be free in two years. Khyffen still has eight. Suppose I were to guarantee his freedom in less than a week?"

Senth tried not to show his glee, but a smile pasted itself across his face anyway.

The Harbinger closed his solid black eyes, head shaking in a way that said, What am I to do with you?

"I'm sorry, sir! You've never lied to me. I trust your word."

The black-skinned man gazed down at him for a silent moment. He nodded and laid a hand on Senth's shoulder. "And well you should."

"What do I have to do, sir, for Khyff's freedom?"

"The job we're meeting about tonight will bring in a fortune for us, but it holds extreme risk for you. I don't usually give you a choice, but this time I'm going to because of the job's importance. I'm also offering to buy Khyffen and free him. In return, I want a few promises."

"You know I want this, sir. I'll do whatever it takes."

The Harbinger's mouth lifted at one side. "Never admit that to anyone either."

"Yes, sir."

"Senthys, you understand why I've kept you on Shackle?"

While Khyff's master had addicted him to Thrust, which put his sex drive into overload, Shackle did the opposite to Senth. From puberty forward, he'd never known life without it. The drug also controlled aggression.

"Yes, Sen'dai," he answered swiftly. "I never want that to happen again."

"Good." The Harbinger tapped a knuckle against his mouth, frowning at him. "You know what they'd do to you if it did, don't you? Where they'd take you?"

"Yes, sir." He stiffened. "I don't want that."

"No, of course not. After five days without Shackle, you'll start withdrawal. Your heart will pound. Your head will feel like it's splitting apart. And for several days, you'll have a semi permanent erection. You understand what that means?"

"Yes, Sen'dai. I'd be as high and strung out as Khyff is on weekends."

"Well put. There's a possibility of stroke if you quit cold. It's extremely dangerous. You must taper off the drug. Do you understand?"

He nodded. "I do, sir."

"This job should take four days, so it's important that you return as soon as it's over."

"Yes, sir."

"I'll dose you before you leave to ensure you have the full five-day effect."

"Thank you, sir."

"The reason I've told you all this is because you'll be working side by side with a Better."

Senth opened his mouth, shut it again, and then mouthed, Better?

"Listen to me, my young Deshai. Despite the romantic nonsense you've heard about Betters being extraordinary lovers, their kisses can poison you. If her saliva mixes with yours, she can control your mind. The touch of her hands will drive you insane. There are ancient myths about sirens, women who used their voices to lure men and then slay them. Betters aren't mythical. They're real. If she subjects you to her passion, you'll be at the mercy of her pleasure forever."

I love that you use your 'world' map as wallpaper...awesome idea. Do you have any tips for world-building (short and sweet), for series writers.

Thanks for having me, Ms Kaye. ;) *waves to Karenne_Lyn* Woot! I'm happy to be here. I'll be checking for posts throughout the day, and can't wait to hear from readers.

Senth and NarrAy have a wonderful story to tell, and Senth's big brother Khyff has a big part of it. Readers loved him in At the Mercy and asked when his book would come out. To this day, his and Mehfawni's love story still makes me both smile and tear up, which says a lot. If you love tortured heroes, Khyff is your man. And if you love playful bad boys, it's Senth. If you love them both, then the Antonello brothers are going to be favorites.

Hint: It won't come out for quite some time, but there is a third Antonello brothers book coming, and we'll get to meet a third brother that neither Senth nor Khyff ever knew anything about.

It's excellent when characters stick with a reader well after the story is over. Looking forward to reading your work, Kayelle.

And it's even greater when a character hangs in there with the author of their stories...kind of lets me know there will be a lot of creative depth to those heroes and heroines. *smile*

It's so great to have you here...the weather out here is a blustery 33 degrees, woke up to a bit of snow, but it's all gone now.

The Robin birds are shaking the tail feathers today. Poor dudes.

It's a balmy 50 in Georgia today, after a night of rain. It smells fresh and clean. The birds are hunting worms on the back yard, and squirrels are having a hey day teasing the neighbor's cats. ;)

Senth was a fun character to create, and he's been in several books since. I have three sets of books set in his universe, and he has had a part in most of them, even if only by mention. His adoptive father (unbeknownst to Senth) is an immortal, and the man's influence is legendary. Senth's keen intellect and prankster habits have made him dangerous to other immortals, so his father must constantly keep watch to ensure Senth doesn't get into more than the usual trouble. Being a thief and able to break into places where secrets are hidden can be a dangerous thing. Yes, he is definitely memorable. :)

This was a lovely interview, Hey kayelle! I like how moral NarrAy is professional about is job; by keeping is job separate from is personal life. He really sounds like quite an intriguing character.

Just dropping by to say hi, Kayelle - please don't include me in the giveaway.

I really enjoyed the interview and the excerpt - especially the way you managed to weave the title into the conclusion!

You're definitely an expert in the marketing art.

The book sounds fascinating, Kayelle. Congratulations! : )

Kayelle Allen said...

I enjoyed being here, Kay Dee. I've hung out on your other blog too, and really had a good time on both.

Criss, thank you. NarrAy is ethical and fair, for all that she gets tangled up in her feelings for Senth. She's a favorite character to write about and has appeared in a couple of other books now.

Lisabet, thank you. When I was writing the book, and wrote that line about being at the mercy of her pleasure, I knew that was going to be an awesome quote. It's hard to get the book title into the story, and not alway necessary, but in this case, it worked very well.

Tara, squee! Thanks for coming over. Good to see you here. ^_^

Yep, I've had emails and I'm about to send off the goodie I promised to those who wrote to me. :)
