Everyone put your hands together
for Sue Perkins, a Muse It Up sister and amazing author of numerous genre and
audiences. She’s here chatting up her newest release, The Sixth Key, a fantasy
romance for adults :) That’s already got my undivided attention. *grins* Before
we get started with our interview, here’s a bit about Sue:
Sue Perkins grew up in Devon, England. and emigrated with her young family
to New Zealand. Sue and her husband live on a three acre property at the top of
New Zealand’s South Island. She works as a graphic artist for a local trade
paper. Her interests include writing, reading, genealogy and zumba.
Sue's reading and writing covers several genres, romance, fantasy for
adults, young adult and middle grade children.
Please tell us how the idea came to you for The Sixth Key.
On the news one night I heard a report about an
accident where the person was taken to hospital unconscious. Of course this set
all sorts of storylines firing round my brain. What would ‘happen if’ when the
woman woke up she was in a completely different world? My heroine decides she's
died and gone to heaven, but isn't sure if she's got it right because she can
see no sign of the Pearly Gates or St Peter.
What drives, motivates, and/or inspires
Tynan?
As the leader of the Mutes he is aware something is
not quite right with his planet. He is determined to find out what is wrong and
believes he must solve the Riddle of the Keys to discover the truth. Then he
meets Riley and his world turns upside down.
Love the name Tynan:)
Give us some insight into Riley. What’s a bit of her back story?
Riley is alone in the world. Her only family was
her parents who died a few years before. She has many acquaintances but no
close friends. Her life consists of her job as a secretary and the occasional
night out with the people she knows. When a gorgeous man enters her life she is
instantly smitten but after a few weeks he disappears leaving her hurt and
alone.
Can you tell us about the abilities of Tynan?
Tynan is the leader of the Mutes, but many of their
people have developed psychic abilities. Tynan is one of these. He is a strong
telepath, plus his magical abilities are well developed, but he seldom uses
them as he senses there is a limit to the amount of magic left on the planet.
Tell us about the world of Sacral?
Sacral is a land of magic and the population has
not bothered to develop technology to any great extent. Humans live on one
continent while the second continent is supposed to be inhabited by wild
beasts, but as no one has ever returned from there it's not known if this is
true.
The people are divided into two sections. The
psychic half, under the leadership of King Hurat, live in the castle and
estates scattered around the continent. The other half of the population are
the Mutes who live in the heart of the forest. In the past they were exiled for
not having psychic abilities but over the centuries their abilities have
developed due to it missing a generation and gifted members of the family
accompany their non-gifted relations to the forest.
Which scene was your favorite to write? Can you share a little of it?
I liked the scene where Riley and Tynan meet for
the first time. She is determined not to be dismissed as a nobody, while he is
fascinated by her. This produces some light hearted moments. Although they
communicate early on in The Sixth Key, they don't actually
meet for some time.
What are you working on now?
I'm working on a Young Fantasy book, the last in a
trilogy about dragons. This is also set on an alternate world and I've had
great fun writing the series.

Quickie Quiz
Getting to know Sue Perkins…
Things you do to relax:
Sleep. No seriously I love reading and doing
jigsaws to relax.
Favorite sport to watch:
I'm not a great sports fan but I do like to watch
bowls and golf.
Cat or Dog:
My family are dog people, but last year our fifteen
year old Huntaway Cross (New Zealand farm working dog) got to the end of her
life. We have decided not to get another dog for the foreseeable future.
Favorite places to write:
That's easy. I have a Stressless chair which is so
comfortable and my laptop sits on a laptop table in front of me. I get so much
done here, but if I'm sitting somewhere I don't like I fidget and use any
excuse to move.
Place you’ve always wanted to go, but haven’t:
New Orleans, but I'm not sure if the New Orleans
I've read about is still there after Hurricane Katrina.
Breakfast drink:
Orange juice and coffee.
Favorite season ~ why:
Summer in New Zealand. This is from beginning of
December to end of February so includes the Christmas period. Time to go out in
the garden, go for walks. Lovely time of year.
What are your hobbies /past times (besides writing):
Recently I've not had much time for hobbies as
deadlines, writing obligations and promotions have cut into my "me"
time. When I do have time I like to go for a walk or do Zumba and of course
reading. I've always got a book by my bed or my reader in my bag.
Contest:
This is the last stop on my blog tour and at the end I will be having a
random draw for one winner of all people who have left comments on the various
blogs. One lucky person will get an
ebook of "The Sixth Key". Details of the tour can be found on my blog

The
Sixth Key
Blurb:
To be normal in a magical world is bad enough, but
Riley is caught in the middle between the deviant Mute and the magical people
who rule Sacral. Two men fight on opposite sides for their world and Riley is
caught in the middle.
EXCERPT:
The Jothur she'd known and loved on Earth had behaved toward her in a gentlemanly way. He'd opened doors for her, held a chair out for her in restaurants. He'd always taken care of her, and this behavior had been part of her love for him.
The Jothur she'd known and loved on Earth had behaved toward her in a gentlemanly way. He'd opened doors for her, held a chair out for her in restaurants. He'd always taken care of her, and this behavior had been part of her love for him.
Now the discovery he'd been living a lie all the time she'd known
him had shaken her trust in him. Had he told her the real truth this evening,
or could he still be lying to her? He hadn't even admitted his true title.
Prince Jothur. Did this mean King Hurat was his father, or could Jothur be one
of the lesser princes? All these questions and lack of answers kept her awake
far longer than she'd anticipated. Eventually Riley dropped off to sleep.
At
first her dreams reminded her of a fairy tale. She floated around the room in
Jothur's arms looking up adoringly at her handsome prince. Suddenly the castle
disappeared. The walls around her resembled a wooden hut and several other
women were with her. The door opened and a blast of cold air heralded the
arrival of a group of men. Jothur came toward her, his clothes no longer the
sophisticated garments he'd worn today. Instead he wore leggings and tunic of
leather, similar to the ones worn by Zlora.
Riley looked up at her beloved. He was different. The pleasant demeanor he'd presented to the court had changed to a grim look of determination. His hair had turned dark instead of blond. He reached out a strong sunburned hand and Riley shrank away. Although this version of Jothur stirred an inner excitement she hadn't experienced with the one in the castle; he also sent a shiver of fear through her.
She woke in a cold sweat and pulled the covers up to her chin. Going over her dream she tried to work out the meaning before it faded from her memory. Why had Jothur been so different? The man she'd known on Earth had been the same as any other man, except for gorgeousness and sexiness. The Jothur she'd been with in the hall tonight could have been the man she'd fallen in love with, but his attitude had changed completely. For one thing, he treated her with an insulting condescension. Was it because memory seldom followed reality? On the other hand, the Jothur of her dream had been a darker, but infinitely more attractive copy. The very thought of being near him frightened her and excited her at the same time.

Thank you so much for inviting me to your blog. I love talking about my books and hope everyone else enjoys my post.
Good Morning, Sue:) Thanks so much for hanging out at my place today:)
I absolutely love your heroes name, Tynan and I like the name, Riley, for a woman...your heroine, nice:)
The concept of this book, falling asleep and waking in another world sounds fascinating to me...thrown from one world into the next. What tension.
What was behind the name 'Sacral' for your world? I know it as an energy point (chakra) between the belly area and the heart:) Interesting:)
Another question about your hobbies - I've heard a lot about Zumba...do you use a specific cd to do it, or do you physically go somewhere to do it? If you use a cd, which do you think would be good for a beginner? (Yea...I want to try it, but think it might be too much for me).
I liked the post Sue. Entertaining as always. New Zealand is on my bucket list! Your book sounds amazing, Sue!
Golf! Really, come on!!!!!! hehe
Penny
I love Sue's MG/YA fantasies. I've got Dragon Clans in my reading queue. Just finished Dragon Flame, so I've got a few more ahead, but I'll get to Clans hopefully before the 3rd in the series appears. So many great books to read and not enough time!
Congrats on Sixth Key, Sue!
Wow, I am impressed. You certainly spend much time writing. When do you have time for hobbies?
They all sound like terrific books. I'll just have to make room on my TBB list.
Hello Penny, Marva, and Lorrie:) Thanks for stopping in to visit with Sue:)
Thank you everyone for stopping by. Penny, I watch golf on TV, don't play it. Kay Dee Sacral came out of my head, I always try and make my heroine, hero and places names start with a different letter and Sacral just popped up. Zumba I go to a class, just a small one where we have fun as well as exercise. I also have a Zumba DVD which is for beginners and I occasionally do this if I haven't time to go to the lesson. I'd say just jump in with a class but it is better if you can find a small local one.
Thanks once again ladies for all the lovely comments and thank you Kay Dee for inviting me.
Sue - it's been fun...let's do it again with another of your romance novels:)
What a fun, entertaining interview. What a delight to make up your own world with all its own rules and then fill it with interesting characters. Sounds like a winner. Best wishes with your new release.
